LAWRENCE, Kan. - Darnell Jackson recorded his first double-double of the season and fifth in his career to lead second-ranked Kansas to an 83-59 Big 12 Conference basketball win against Iowa State on Wednesday.
Kansas improved to 19-0 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 Conference play,
while Iowa State dropped to 12-7 and 2-2 in league action. The
Jayhawks' 19-0 record matches their third-best 19-game record in school
history.
Darnell Jackson, a 6-8, senior, registered 21 points on nine of 14
shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds in leading the Jayhawks' inside
game. He was helped inside by Darrell Arthur, who scored 16
points in 19 minutes of action.
All five Kansas starters scored in double figures as Russell Robinson
and Brandon Rush each had 11 and Mario Chalmers chipped in 10 points.
Iowa State was led by Wesley Johnson, who scored 21. Craig Brackins added 13 for the visitors.
Kansas dominated the game on the inside outscoring Iowa State 42-16 in
the paint and out-rebounding the Cyclones 46-33. The inside duo of
Jackson and Arthur produced 19 of KU's 42 first half points.
The duo was a combined eight of 12 shooting in the first half as the
Jayhawks went up by 42-32 at the break.
Kansas opened the second half on a 20-8 run to gain a 62-40 lead and
never looked back in recording the 24-point win.
KU, the nation's field goal percentage leader, shot an even 50 percent
marking the 15th time in 19 games that KU hit half of its field goal
attempts.
The Jayhawks also were successful behind the three-point line, making
five of 10 attempts. KU also made 14 of 18 free
throws. Meanwhile KU held Iowa State to just 31.1 percent
shooting, marking the fifth straight game the opponent has shot 40
percent or lower.
Rush tied a career-high with six assists and added five rebounds, while
Chalmers also handed out six assists and was two of two from
three-point range.
Kansas is 4-0 in league play for the first time since 2005 and has won
27 straight regular season games. KU also improved to 14-0 in
home games this year, including a 13-0 mark in Allen Fieldhouse.
For the Kansas senior class, the victory was their 100th in 120
games. That marks the 22nd straight year a KU senior class
has won at least 100 games during those players' careers.
Kansas will return to action when it hosts Nebraska on Saturday at
12:45 p.m. The game will be televised regionally through ESPN
Plus. The Jayhawks defeated Nebraska 79-58 at Lincoln on Jan.
