KC Classic - Phog.net's Day 1 Breakdown

Adam Woodbury

The KC Classic is under way and, while KU commit Zach Peters wasn't on hand for the first night (Team Texas doesn't play their first game until Saturday morning), there was plenty for a KU fan to look for on Friday night.

Kingdom Hoops 15s v. Martin Bros. 15s

Peter Jok – 6'4 SG, Kingdom Hoops 2013 – It was only a brief look, but there is a good deal to like about the young Iowa prospect. He's very long with huge hands, while showing a pretty high level of athleticism. His jumpshot looks pretty good, too.

Martin Bros. 16s v. KC 76ers

Adam Woodbury – 6'11 C, Martin Bros. 2012 – The lanky center struggled to impact the first half, but came alive late in the second to help lead his team to victory. He blocked shots and showed nice post moves going to his favored left hand. We'd like to see him maintain the late aggressiveness throughout an entire game, but it was nice to see him show a mean streak (even if it was a brief one).

Marcus Paige – 6'0 PG, Martin Bros. 2012 – The long, skinny PG dominated the 2nd half with his fantastic skill level. He controlled the pace of the game and was able to break down the athletic 76ers defenders at will. He can be a pretty pesky defender too with his length.

Benny Parker – 5'7 PG, KC 76ers 2012 – The tiny PG displayed his toughness in keeping the 76ers in the game. He found his spot early, hitting pull-up jumpers from the free throw line with ease. In the 2nd half, though, he settled for far too many deep 3s.

Athletes First v. Spiece Mo-Kan

Nino Jackson – 6'2 PG, Athletes First 2012 – The talk of the Jayhawk nation for the past week, Jackson showed up with some local hype. Unfortunately, it wasn't his night – at all. The Athletes First team, short a few key players for the weekend, struggled to break down the disciplined Mo-Kan side. Jackson forced some drives and jumpers, but the talent is clearly there. He's an elite athlete with amazing speed, so hopefully that will be on full display on Saturday.

Nino Williams – 6'6 PF, Spiece Mo-Kan 2011 – The Kansas State commitment had a big night, playing hard inside and throwing down a couple of nasty dunks. The Wildcats will be getting a guy in Nino that will play hard, defend hard, and get out on the break. He didn't need to show much on the wing today, however, as he was able to use his strength to out-muscle his opponents in the post.
