More news and notes while thinking Lew Perkins really needs to talk to someone about all these early kickoffs…
• A KU win would be their 14th in a row at home and their seventh in a row in conference
• A victory would be the Jayhawks’ first against a ranked team this season (0-2 so far this year).
• It would also make KU bowl-eligible for the fourth straight season and the fifth time in six years.
• KU would be 18-3 in its last 21 games and 21-4 in its last 25 games if they score more points than
Texas Tech
.
• All-time, KU is 1-9 against Texas Tech.
• A loss would give the Jayhawks back-to-back losses for the first time since mid-2006. Did
Kansas
fans ever think they’d go two years without back-to-back losses?
• QB
Todd Reesing
(6,012) needs 399 passing yards to become the KU career leader (Frank Seurer had 6,410). I’d love for him to throw for 400, too, but I’d just as soon he threw for 380 in a win over Tech and break the record against
Kansas State
.
• Reesing has thrown for at least 200 yards and one TD in 12 consecutive games.
• Reesing needs 33 completions to pass Mike Norseth (227) for second on the KU season completions list. He will almost surely break the season record of 276 currently held by… Todd Reesing.
• If Reesing throws two TD passes, he skips Bill Whittemore (18) for second on the KU season touchdown passes list. The current record of 33 is held by… Todd Reesing.
• Just one Reesing TD pass will set a new KU record for consecutive games throwing a scoring pass (eight). He is currently tied at seven with… eh, you get the idea.
• WR Dezmon Briscoe needs two touchdown receptions to tie Willie Vaughn and Bruce Adams for the KU career touchdown receptions record (15). He also needs two TD receptions to tie
Marcus Henry
(10) for the school season record for TD catches.
• WR
Kerry Meier
needs just seven receptions to pass
Dexton Fields
(63 in 2007) for second on the KU season receptions list.
• RB
Jake Sharp
has rushed for 100 yards in two straight games. The last time a Jayhawk ran for 100 yards in three straight was last year when
Brandon McAnderson
got it done against Texas A&M,
Nebraska
and
Oklahoma State
.
• Kudos and huzzahs to LB
Joe Mortensen
who has started a team-best 32 consecutive games. DE
Russell Brorsen
has started 28 straight, S
Darrell Stuckey
24 and LB
James Holt
21. The top offensive consecutive start streak is shared by offensive linemen
Ryan Cantrell
,
Adrian Mayes
and
Chet Hartley
and QB Todd Reesing at 20 games. The four of them line up next to each other. Coincidence???
• Texas Tech is the first ranked team to play at Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium since #25
Iowa State
played here on November 26, 2005. Kansas posted a 24-21 overtime victory in that game to earn a Ft. Worth Bowl bid.
• We’re just past the All-Star break and Kansas already has two receivers with at least 600 receiving yards:
Dez Briscoe
(705) and Kerry Meier (632). WR Johnathan Wilson adds 342 more.
• Kansas is one of just two schools in the potent Big 12 to have two different players with at least three 100-yard receiving games this season. I have 200 Scout points for anyone who knows the other (answer at the end).
• Dez Briscoe’s 12-catch, 269-yard performance against
Oklahoma
last week is current;y the top receiving performance in the country among FBS schools. Okie State’s
Dez Bryant
made nine catches for 236 yards earlier this season against the mighty
Houston
Cougars.
• Kerry Meier ranks fifth in the country with 8.1 catches per game. You can also call him All-State because he’s got such good hands: 60 percent (34 of 57) of his receptions have been for first downs, 35 percent (12 of 34) of his first-down producing receptions have come on third or fourth down and 21 percent (12 of 57) of his receptions have come on third or fourth down (all for first downs).
• KU has scored on 38 possessions so far this year. They’ve had 11 scoring drives that took at least four minutes off the clock, but 15 have occurred in less than two, including their last seven (six TDs and one FG).
• Seven of KU’s 14 scoring drives in three Big 12 games have covered at least 70 yards. Of those seven drives, four were in less than two minutes.
• In all seven Kansas games this season, the team that has led after three quarters has gone on to win the game. In the
Mark Mangino
era, KU is 36-5 when leading after three periods and 4-30 when trailing going into the fourth.
• The other Big 12 team to have two receivers with three 100-yard games this year? You’d think it was Texas Tech, wouldn’t you? It’s
Missouri
.
• Happy October 25th birthday to Ciara (22); Sara Lumholdt of the A*Teens (23); Yes vocalist
John Anderson
(60); Helen Reddy, who we can blame for “I am Woman” (66); and basketball coach/furniture mover Bob Knight will celebrate his go**am birthday (67).
