More News and Notes: KU - Oklahoma

More news and notes while looking at the KU-OU line and thinking that 21 points is an awful lot of points.

• A win over Oklahoma would make the Sooners the highest-ranked opponent KU has defeated since beating #4 Colorado 40-24 at Boulder in 1995.
• A Jayhawk win would give KU a 3-0 Big 12 record for just the second time in the 13-year history of the conference (2007). A victory would also mark their sixth straight Big 12 road win and improve KU to 10-1 in its last 11 Big 12 games.
• Prior to Saturday, Kansas has lost four in a row to Oklahoma.
• Look for QB Todd Reesing to add to his collection of school records (28) on Saturday.  He needs just six completions to pass Frank Seurer (467) for the KU career completion record. He needs just 39 yards to pass Seurer for the Jayhawks career total offense record (6,112).
• I have 100 Scout points for anyone who can tell me the highest-ranked non-quarterback on the all-time KU total offense list. The answer’s at the end of this article.
• Next time Reesing throws for 300-plus, he will tie his own season record of five 300-plus yard passing games that he set last year.
• After 22 games, Reesing already holds the career records for completion percentage (65.1); passing yards per game (257.7); TD passes (51); 300-yard passing games (nine); 200-yard passing games (16); consecutive 200-yard passing games (11 and still active); consecutive games throwing a TD pass (11 and still active); total offense yards per game (276); and touchdowns responsible for (58).
• Kansas has posted a 5-46-1 record against teams ranked in the top five of the Associated Press poll all-time. KU’s wins were #1 Missouri (23-7, 1960); vs. #5 Texas A&M (28-10, 1974); vs. #2 Oklahoma (28-11, 1984); #4 Colorado (40-24, 1995); and vs. #5 Virginia Tech (24-21, last year’s Orange Bowl).  KU tied #3 Colorado 17-17 in 1977.
• Kansas has recorded at least 400 yards of total offense in five straight games, scored at least 30 points in four straight and held its opponent to less than 200 yards rushing in 33 consecutive games.
• Reesing needs just 17 completions to pass Frank Seurer (187) for third on the KU season completions list.
• Reesing needs 274 passing yards for fifth on the KU season passing yardage list.
• WR Dexton Fields needs six receptions to pass Clark Green (122) for fourth on the KU career receptions list.
• WR Kerry Meier needs six receptions to pass Bob Johnson (58) for third and 11 to pass Dexton Fields’ (63) for second on the KU season receptions list.
• DE Jake Laptad has recorded a sack in three straight games.
• LB Joe Mortensen has started a current team-best 31 consecutive and 31 total games in his career.
• Kerry Meier continues to be Reesing’s go-to guy. Meier’s 8.8 receptions per game are third in the nation. 62 percent (33 of 53) of his receptions have been for first downs. 36 percent (12 of 33) of those have come on third or fourth down. 23 percent (12 of 53) of his receptions have come on third or fourth down (all for first downs).
• Kansas has won seven consecutive day games and is playing a day game for the third straight week.
• October 18th in history: Columbia, Princeton, Rutgers and Yale set rules for college football (1873); the New York Herald Tribune gives Four Horsemen nickname to Notre Dame backs after the Irish beat Army, 13-7 (1924); the American League votes to allow the Athletics to move from Kansas City to Oakland and expand the league to 12 teams in 1969 with expansion franchises in Kansas City and Seattle; Bob Beamon destroyed the world record in the long jump by leaping 29’ 2” in Mexico City, breaking the old record by nearly two feet; Reggie Jackson hit three consecutive home runs to tie Babe Ruth’s World Series record (1977); the Detroit Pistons blocked 21 Atlanta Hawks shots to set an NBA record (1980); and Toronto became first non-U.S. team to win a World Series game, defeating Atlanta 5-4, you betcha.
• And the Scout points go to… of the top 15 all-time KU total offense leaders, 12 were quarterbacks, if you count Bobby Douglass. Even if you don’t, he wasn’t the highest-ranked non-QB. That honor goes to RB June Henley who checks in at number nine with 3,841 total yards from 1993-96.  Number 12 is RB Tuxedo Tony Sands with 3,788 yards (396 of them against Missouri in Columbia, November 23, 1991). Finally, RB Laverne Smith rushed for 3,074 yards from 1976-79 and comes in at number 14.
