More news and notes while waiting thinking about just how big this game is for both the Jayhawks and the Buffalos…
Saturday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN2. The last time KU had a home football game on ESPN or ESPN2 was the Texas Christian game in 1995 on ESPN.
A win would make KU 20-3 over their last 23 games. It would also make KU 2-0 in the Big 12 for just the third time in the 13-year history of the conference (1997, 2007). A victory would also extend the Jayhawks’ home winning streak to13. They’ve gone 22-2 in the last 24 contests in Marvin Grove.
Colorado
is unranked, and KU has won 18 of their last 19 against un-ranked teams.
A win would make KU 12-3 in its last 15 games against the Big 12 North. A win over Colorado would make it three straight against the Golden Buffalos. The last time KU won three in a row against CU was 1962-64.
As always, a loss would suck.
The Jayhawks have held their last 32 opponents to less than 200 yards rushing.
QB
Todd Reesing
needs 33 pass completions to pass Franks Seurer for the KU career record (467). Bonus Scout points for anyone who remembers where Seurer was from.
Reesing needs one 300-yard passing game to tie his own school record he set last year for 300 yard passing games in a season (five). He also needs 104 yards of total offense to pass Chip Hilleary (5,888) for second on the all-time KU total offensive yard chart.
Reesing needs 29 pass completions to pass David Jaynes (172) for fifth on the KU season completions list.
WR
Dexton Fields
needs six receptions to pass Richie Estell (117) for fifth on the KU career receptions list.
A TD reception for both Dezmon Briscoe and Dexton Fields will tie them with
Marcus Henry
for fifth on the KU career touchdown receptions list (13).
WR
Kerry Meier
has emerged as KU’s go-to guy. Meier averages 8.8 receptions per game – second in the nation – and has caught at least seven passes in every game this year. He has also recorded 100 receiving yards in three straight games. Sixty-one percent (27 of 44) of his receptions have been for first downs; 41 percent (11 of 27) of his first-down producing receptions have come on third or fourth down; and 25 percent (11 of 44) of his receptions have come on third or fourth down (all for first downs).
WR Dezmon Briscoe has caught at least two passes in 11 consecutive games. His last game without a catch was in Boulder last year.
LB
Joe Mortensen
has recorded a sack in two straight games. He has also eaten a baby.
Kansas
has won six consecutive day games.
Kansas has produced at least five explosives (plays of 20 yards or more) in each of the last four games after getting just one in the season opener against FIU. The Jayhawks have averaged six plays of at least 20 yards or more in the last four games. KU has scored eight touchdowns from outside the red zone this season.
Through the first five games, Kansas has had seven different players lead the team in tackles (includes ties). The only Jayhawk to lead the team in tackles more than once is LB
James Holt
.
Kansas opponents have started 17 drives at or inside their own 20-yard line and only one has resulted in a score: a field goal by South Florida.
Kansas has won five games in the
Mark Mangino
era when scoring 20 points or less and two of those have come against Colorado (20-15 in 2006 and 19-14 in 2007).
KU has scored at least 30 points in 10 of its last 11 home games with the exception being a 29-0 win against
Louisiana Tech
earlier this year.
October 11th has been a big day throughout history. The Great Chicago Fire was finally extinguished (1871) after three days and 300 deaths. Saturday Night Live premiered with a totally obliterated George Carlin as host (1975). The first three-way presidential debate took place between George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and H. Ross Perot (1992).
Deion Sanders
played for
Atlanta Falcons
and the
Atlanta Braves
on the same day (1997).
Happy October 11th birthday to Daryl Hall of ‘80s pop group Hall and Oates (60); Hall of Fame QB Steve Young (47); funny and deceptively hot actress Joan Cusack (46); PGA wanna-be Michelle Wie (19); and Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange (41).
