Shocker at Hoglund

Posted Apr 7, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior centerfielder Gus Milner blasted a pair of home runs and posted six RBI in a 4-for-5 performance as the University of Kansas baseball team pounded in-state rival Wichita State, 13-6, on Wednesday at Hoglund Ballpark.

The win improves the Jayhawks’ overall record this season to 23-12, while Wichita State falls to 23-10.

Kansas registered the first score of the contest as they tallied a run in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by junior first baseman Jared Schweitzer, which scored Milner who lead the inning off with a double. The base hit extended Schweitzer’s career-long hitting-streak to eight games.

Milner added to the Jayhawk lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as he connected on his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field. Junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke also added a RBI single as the Jayhawks batted around in the frame to take a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning.

WSU scored in the top of the fourth on a RBI double off the bat of Damon Sublett, who finished the contest 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.

The Shockers collected a pair of hits and took advantage of two Jayhawk errors in the top of the fifth to plate three runs and cut the KU lead to 5-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Jayhawks again used the long ball to recapture momentum, as senior Andy Scholl pinch hit for Schweitzer and connected on a three-run home run to right center to press the Jayhawk lead to 8-4.

Scholl added his fourth RBI of the contest on a bloop single in bottom of the sixth and pinch hitter Brock Simpson chipped in with an RBI double in the frame to give KU a 10-5 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh it was Milner who again made an impression on the scoreboard. With a pair of runners on base, Milner blasted a pitch over the wall in left center for his second home run of the contest.

Shocker shortstop Nick McCoola drove in the final WSU run of the ballgame with a RBI fielder’s choice in the top of the eighth.

Sophomore pitcher Sean Land picked up the win by pitching a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game. The victory improves his overall record this season to 3-2.

Kansas baseball is back in action this weekend as it travels to Norman, Okla., to battle the Oklahoma Sooners in a Big 12 match-up.
