LAWRENCE, Kan. - Junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the University of Kansas baseball team which pounded out 15 runs on 15 hits, as they defeated South Dakota State 15-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Hoglund Ballpark on Friday.

The Jayhawks (9-3) jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run double off the bat of Van Slyke. Junior left fielder Matt Baty lead off the inning with a single and was soon joined on base by senior first baseman Andy Scholl and junior shortstop Ritchie Price who drew walks to load the bases. Van Slyke followed with his third double of the season to plate all three runners and give the Jayhawks a 3-0 lead.

Kansas tagged three runs onto its lead in the bottom of the third inning. Junior center fielder Gus Milner drove in the first run of the inning as he tripled to deep right center field to plate Van Slyke, who had reached on a single. Milner scored himself later in the inning on a RBI ground out off the bat of senior designated hitter Travis Dunlap. Freshman third baseman Erik Morrison drove in the final run of the innings on a RBI single.

Dunlap, who started for the first time on the season, finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Jayhawks offense exploded to post six runs and take a commanding 12-0 advantage. The inning was highlighted by the first home run of the season by Scholl to lead off the frame and a two-run triple by Morrison.

Kansas tacked three runs onto its lead in the bottom of the fifth to open a 15-0 lead. Dunlap collected two more RBI on a single and freshman Matt Berner collected his first hit of the season on a RBI single.

Jayhawk starter Clint Schambach (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, pitching five innings and allowing only two hits while striking out five.

South Dakota State (0-3) was able to score a pair of unearned runs off of reliever Scott Sharpe in the top of the ninth inning to avoid the shutout.

Kansas will go for the sweep of the four-game series in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at Hoglund Ballpark.
