The University of Kansas cross country team travels to Stillwater, Okla.,
this weekend to compete in the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree. The race
will be held at the Oklahoma State cross country course, beginning at 8:30
a.m. At the 2002 OSU Cowboy Jamboree, the men's team finished fifth out
of 21 teams and the women finished third out of 18 teams. After
Saturday, the Jayhawks will have a week to rest before heading to Cedar
Falls, Iowa, to compete in the NCAA Pre- Nationals Invitational on October
Fresh off its convincing 35-14 win over arch-rival Missouri, the Kansas
football team enjoys this week off before travelling to Boulder, Colo., on
Oct. 11 for a matchup against the Colorado Buffaloes. With its win over
the Tigers, Kansas owns a 4-1 record for the first time since the 1997
season. The win also marked the Jayhawks' first victory over a ranked
opponent in its last 13 tries, dating back to a 33-17 victory over No. 17
Colorado on Oct. 24, 1998. The Kansas defense played its best game of
the season and allowed just 196 yards of total offense the entire
afternoon. Freshman running back John Randle recorded his first career
touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a three-yard rush. 50,071 fans
packed Memorial Stadium -- the most-ever to witness a KU/MU game in

golf team shot a three-round total 855 to win the 15-team 2003 Kansas
Invitational (Sept. 22-23) at the 6,950 yard, par-72 Alvamar Golf Club in
Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks finished 17 strokes ahead of second-place
North Texas. Kansas returns to action Oct. 6-7 in the Pepperdine Club
Glove Intercollegiate at the Saticoy Country Club in Camarillo, Calif.
Kansas (9-2-0, 1-1-0) opened Big 12 play Sept. 26, as it hosted Baylor on
SuperTarget Field. Neither team could break through until the 108th minute (2OT) of the contest as senior Carmel Kaplinger netted her first
goal of the season to give KU its ninth victory and sixth consecutive win. Texas Tech handed KU its first Big 12 defeat, 3-2, in Lubbock,
Sept. 28. KU returns home, Oct. 3, to host No. 16 Texas on SuperTarget
Field at 4:30 p.m. The Jayhawks will then take on No. 3 Texas A&M, Oct.
5 at Noon on SuperTarget Field.
The Kansas softball team will host five area teams in the 2003 Fall
Jayhawk Classic Saturday and Sunday at the Clinton Lake Softball Complex,
located at the K10 bypass and Wakarusa in Lawrence, Kan. A total of six
teams will participate in the two-day 'Fall Ball' event: Kansas, Washburn,
Emporia State, Kansas State, Johnson County C.C. and Butler County C.C.
The University of Kansas tennis team participated in the 2003 Polo Tennis
National Collegiate Preview last weekend in Tulsa, Okla. The Jayhawks
were led by the solid play of its doubles teams which went 5-0. The
'Hawks will return to action the weekend of Oct. 10-12 at the ECAC
Championships in New York, N.Y.
Kansas (10-4, 2-1 Big 12) went 2-0 last week, sweeping UMKC Monday and
defeating Baylor 3-2 at home on Saturday. Three Jayhawks recorded
double-digit kills as Kansas defeated UMKC 3-0 to close out its 2003
non-conference schedule with an 8-3 record. Senior Sarah Rome posted a
match-high 21 kills as KU edged Baylor 3-2 Saturday night at the Horejsi
Family Athletics Center. Freshman Janaina Correa also added 18 kills, 12
digs and three aces in the victory over BU. The Jayhawks will hit the
road to continue Big 12 play and the Border War series Wednesday night at
Missouri and will face Texas Tech in Lubbock on Saturday.
The women's golf team was off last week. This week it prepares for the
Shootout at the Legends, to be held Oct. 6-7 in Franklin, Ind.
