Balanced Attack

Before the Lady Raiders open up play in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic today, Steve Strain explains how opposing teams have to prepare for more than just one Lady Raider.

If you are an opposing coach of the Lady Raiders trying to figure out who to key on, you might as well close your eyes and throw darts at a Lady Raider roster.

In Sunday's win over Northern Colorado, Tech proved again to simply be a hard team to defend because they're a team leaving opponents to wonder WHO to defend.

Sunday's numbers are only one example in their 68-41 win over UNC with Casey Morris leading the way scoring a game high 18.  But not far behind was Christine Hyde with 15 and Chynna Brown adding 12.

But scouting this team is really a matter of picking your poison because in Tech's previous game, Brown led the way with 21 and Kelsi Baker poured in a career high 16.

Then there was the Lamar game when Hyde topped the list with a career high 21.  Before that, Morris had the hot hand all the way through the Basketball Travelers Invitational, and to finish the point, Monique Smalls averaged 18 points in back to back games - including scoring a team high and career high 21 at New Mexico.

As we move toward Big 12 play, I think the variety of options works in more than one way to benefit this team. Not only do they make it tough for opponents to focus on one or two potential scoring threats, but the Lady Raiders also know if one or two players have an off night, there are several others still very capable of filling the void.

And, as for opponents, they can watch a lot of film and scout all they want, but there are only so many bull's eyes to go around and when you shut one or two down there are still plenty more that can hurt you.
