The Big 12 released the 2013 regular season football schedule Tuesday and for Kansas, it will provide both challenges and great intrigue, as they head into head coach Charlie Weis' second year in Lawrence.
The season will begin on September 7th, when they host South Dakota inside Memorial Stadium. 2012 saw the Jayhawks beat South Dakota State in the opener.
Week two will provide KU with an opportunity for revenge, when they travel to Houston, to face the Rice Owls. Rice came from behind to upset on a last second field goal Kansas 25-24 in Lawrence, this season.
On September 21st, Louisiana Tech will come calling to Memorial Stadium. The question will be will Bulldogs coach Sonny Dykes still be leading them by then. Odds are, Dykes won't, as somebody will likely give the highly successful Mike Leach disciple an opportunity.
The Jayhawks will then have a bye week on September 28th before beginning a grueling Big 12 slate that will feature nine straight league games in as many weeks, as of now.
It'll begin with a visit from Texas Tech on October 5th. The Jayhawks nearly stunned the Red Raiders in Lubbock this year and took a 20-0 first quarter lead before falling at home the year before.Texas, a team KU was one play from upsetting in Lawrence in 2012.
November 23rd will see the Jayhawks' last road game in Ames against Iowa State, who will always be salty under coach Paul Rhoads.
Adding the most intrigue to the schedule will be the finally, scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend, when Kansas concludes its season by hosting in-state rival Kansas State on November 30th. The build up of that game will bring back some of the bad blood, the finale lost when Missouri left the Big 12 after last year.
The schedule dates are tentative for now, as they are subject to change to accommodate television requests, which usually happens. Any changes must be turned into the Big 12 by July 1st.
