Lyons has interest in Kansas

Kansas head coach Bill Self has made no secret of his desire to land a point guard capable of coming in and making an impact next season - thanks to the departure of senior All-Big 12 floor general Tyshawn Taylor. Within picking somewhat slim this late in the recruiting process for the Class of 2012, alternative sources of talent need to be considered. Sources, for example, such as transfers.

Enter Xavier point guard Mark Lyons.

A redshirt junior during the 2011-2012 season, Lyons will graduate in the very near future with one year of eligibility remaining. Yesterday, the Musketeers announced he would leave the program in search of a new home for that final season.

Last season, he averaged 15.1 points, 2.8 assists and 3.2 rebounds, en route to third team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Though many schools have come calling with interest, Lyons has chosen to focus on Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky, and hopes to visit all three following graduation.

"(The list is) firm for right now, yeah, it seems that way," he said. "I have interest from other schools but I just narrowed it down to those three."

In the Jayhawks, Lyons finds a number of attractive qualities.

"They showed interest in me at my prep school (Brewster Academy) when I went there, and I know Coach Self is a great guy," he said. "He's definitely one of the reasons I want to go there. They have a great program and a great fan base."

The 2011-2012 Kansas squad featured a pair of Brewster alums in Naadir Tharpe and Thomas Robinson. Lyons is familiar with both, to varying degrees.

"I know Naadir more than I know Thomas Robinson," he explained. "But I do know those guys and they have told me great things about the program."

Though speculation has arisen that Arizona holds an edge due to the pre-existing relationship between he and Wildcats head coach Sean Miller, Lyons maintains he is giving equal consideration to all three options.
