Jayhawks pick up first 2013 commitment

Posted Feb 24, 2012

Wednesday, Basehor (KS) Linwood tight end Ben Johnson picked up a scholarship offer from the University of Kansas. He didn't need long to decide, as Thursday night he announced his intention to become a Jayhawk, making him the first member of the Kansas recruiting class of 2013.

As a junior in 2011, Ben Johnson had a breakout season for the Basehor (KS) Linwood, helping the Bobcats to an outstanding 10-1 season.

At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, he's a match-up nightmare for opposing defenses with his size and overall athleticism, and Head Coach Steve Hopkins would frequently exploit this advantage, splitting Johnson out wide. He totaled 56 catches for 954 yards and 12 touchdowns during the season.

Johnson was a visitor to Kansas football's Junior Day on Saturday, Feb. 11, and the Jayhawks pulled the trigger on an offer this week. Thursday, the athletic tight end announced his commitment via his personal Twitter account, stating emphatically - "Officially a Jayhawk baby!"

Johnson is the first commitment to Head Coach Charlie Weis from the Class of 2013. Stay tuned to Phog.net and Scout.com for interviews with and analysis of the Sunflower State star in the next 24 hours.
