Crist to Kansas

Charlie Weis has landed his first big fish - and it's a former five-star quarterback. Notre Dame senior transfer Dayne Crist, who recently graduated and has one year of eligibility remaining, announced Thursday morning he would be joining the Kansas football team.

Humble and understated, Crist made his intentions know via his personal Twitter account Thursday morning.

"After a long and difficult decision making process, I'm incredibly excited to join the Kansas football team," he wrote. "Rock Chalk Jayhawk!"

Crist announced Dec. 5 he would transfer from the University of Notre Dame at the conclusion of the fall semester. The starter for much of the 2010 season until he suffered a season-ending injury during an Oct. 30, 2010 contest with Tulsa, he was named the starter by Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly to open the 2011 season. Crist played just one half before being replaced by sophomore Tommy Rees. He served in a backup capacity for the rest of the season.

The decision to join the Jayhawks makes sense on a number of levels, but begins first and foremost with his relationship with new Kansas head coach Charlie Weis.

Weis, who was the head coach at Notre Dame from 2005-2009, recruited Crist to South Bend, Ind. and the two developed a strong bond. And when Ron Powlus - former quarterbacks coach for Weis at Notre Dame - was announced as a part of the Kansas staff, those ties only strengthened.

"He and I have a very good relationship," Crist said, of Weis. "He's always been supportive through my career. Even when he ended up coaching at other places, he's always been an incredible person in my life."

Following his visit to Kansas the weekend of Dec. 10, he told Phog.net the program at which he landed had to meet a couple of key criteria: the opportunity to play immediately, and not just play, but play successfully.

Ultimately, the Jayhawks fit the bill.

"If I didn't think that they couldn't fit those two (criteria) fully, I wouldn't have wasted Coach Weis' time or my own," he said, simply, in a Dec. 13 interview.

Crist chose Kansas over Delaware and Wisconsin.
