The announcement from Kansas Athletics consisted of precisely one sentence:
"Kansas Athletics will introduce Charlie Weis, former New England Patriots offensive coordinator, former Notre Dame head coach and current offensive coordinator at the University of Florida, as its new football coach at a press conference tomorrow."
As Phog.net reported Thursday morning, Weis had emerged as the clear frontrunner for the job. Whispers of a Friday press conference to introduce the new head of the football program sprung up Wednesday evening, and were compounded by multiple sources Thursday morning.
Kansas athletics director Sheahon Zenger led a remarkably quiet and efficient search, to which names such as Gus Malzahn, Troy Calhoun, Mike Leach and Larry Fedora were linked, well before Weis popped up on the radar.
Weis spent 2010 as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, guiding them to the playoffs and the No. 1 rushing offense in the NFL.
