Gill relieved of his duties at Kansas

After two seasons in Lawrence, Kan. during which he compiled a 5-19 record and finished at the bottom of the Big 12 Conference, Sunday it was announced by Kansas Athletics that Turner Gill had been let go as head coach of the Jayhawks.

Putting an end to weeks of speculation, Sunday the Kansas Athletics Department announced the firing of Head Coach Turner Gill.

The news comes comes as little surprise to most followers of Kansas Jayhawks football. In his two years at the helm, Gill compiled a 5-19 record with numerous blowout losses. As support for him among the fan ranks dwindled, so too did attendance.

Kansas athletics director Sheahon Zenger informed Gill late Sunday afternoon.

"After a thorough evaluation of our football program," Zenger said. "I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference. I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches."

Following Saturday's season-ending 24-10 loss to Missouri, several current players and coaches spoke in vehement defense of Gill, who himself said he believed he would retain his position.

Per his contract, Gill is owed an additional $6 million, and Zenger said Kansas would fulfill its obligations on that front.

"We are striving for excellence across KU's academic and research missions, and that drive extends to our athletic programs," said KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. "In consulting with Athletics Director Zenger, I agree that in order to achieve the excellence we seek in Kansas Football it is time to make a leadership change. Turner Gill is a man of integrity and we appreciate his service to our community."

Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell has been named interim head coach in Gill's stead. Now, the search begins for a new head coach.

"I have no specific timetable," Zenger said. "Naturally I would like to have a new coach on board as soon as possible." Recommended Stories
