Four-star 2012 forward listing Kansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - One of the top performers at this weekend's "Real Deal in the Rock" tournament is power forward Ricardo Gathers of Brandon Bass Elite. Phog.net's Ryan Noel checks in with a report on the athletic big man, with whom the Kansas Jayhawks are picking up steam.

A new name for Kansas fans in the 2012 class is Ricardo Gathers, hailing from Riverside Academy in Louisiana.

One of the more college-ready bodies here at the Real Deal in the Rock (Little Rock, AR) belongs to 2012 PF Ricardo Gathers of the Brandon Bass Elite. The young post player is built like a defensive end with wide shoulders, bruising arms, and legs like Roman columns.

The forward isn't all looks though, as he possesses great athleticism and a budding skillset to match it. He can step out to the extended elbows to hit jumpshots and displays nice touch on his free throws. Gathers is particularly tough to stop when he gets the ball at the free throw line and can then get his shoulders past a defending big man to attack the rim. He elevates quickly and is not afraid to dunk on anyone inside.

It will be crucial for Gathers to continue his post development - he has yet to show much more than power spin moves down low - as he moves toward the end of his prep career and onto his college one.

While a probably a new name to Kansas fans, Gathers certainly isn't a new face in the AAU scene - he has been highly rated by most scouting services since the 8th grade - he is now starting to move further along in his recruitment.

According to his brother, Greg Gathers, Ricardo "likes St. John's, Kansas, Texas, Syracuse, California, Florida, LSU, and now Arkansas". Gathers also says his brother has yet to take any unofficial visits, but should be able to take a few in the near future. As of now, the near future also includes a scheduled trip to Lawrence for the Jayhawk Invitational (April 29 - May 1).

Kansas coaches, among many others, will surely be keeping tabs on Gathers through the AAU circuit this spring and summer, and Phog.net will keep you updated as his recruitment moves along.
